Q: Can anyone who has no experience in this field take this course?

A:
Of course! This course is taught at a level so that individuals who work in the field as well as those who have no work experience benefit from completing modules. Those with no work experience receive the basic knowledge needed to begin a career in the health care insurance field. It will be important to undergo additional training on the job to learn the specifics about the third party payer contracts with which your organization (e.g., physician's office) must comply. Training can be obtained by attending third party payer education sessions (usually free).

Q: If someone takes this course would it get them in the door for a job in Medical Billing?

A:
This course provides entry-level knowledge a new professional needs to gain entry into the health care insurance field. Whether seeking employment with a health care organization (e.g., physician's office) or third party payer (e.g., health insurance company), individuals must be prepared to undergo additional training required of employers to learn policies and procedures related to health insurance processing at that organization. Some organizations will also require employees to undergo formal education training with an accredited school.

Q: If I were to learn billing and coding through this path, would I learn enough that I could become certified?

A:
Once you've achieved employment in the health care insurance field and undergone additional training related to third party payer claims processing, you would be eligible for certification as a Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRA), sponsored by the American Medical Billing Association (AMBA) and/or the Healthcare Reimbursement Specialist (HRS), sponsored by the National Electronic Billers Alliance (NEBA) and endorsed by the Alliance of Claims Assistance Professionals (ACAP). Achieving certification as a coding specialist can be accomplished only after meeting criteria required by the professional associations that sponsor those exams. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) sponsors the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) exams, and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) sponsors the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exams. Module 1 of the online Understanding Health Insurance course details certification paths.

Q: Once purchased do I get all of the 17 modules at once?

A:
Yes, and you can work through each module at your own pace as long as you complete all of them within the 20-week access time. Modules 1-4 teach general health insurance processing concepts, and so you can move through those modules more rapidly as compared with subsequent modules. Each modules contains explanations of concepts and self-assessments so you can determine if you have mastered the content. Modules that teach insurance processing concepts also allow you to complete the CMS-1500 claim online and receive immediate feedback as to accuracy of completion.

Q: How will this online course help me in my career as an insurance specialist?

A: All health care facilities and physician offices submit insurance claims to receive reimbursement for providing health care services to patients. As a result, there is a great need for qualified individuals to process claims to ensure the maximum reimbursement, which contributes to the success of the facility or physician’s practice.

Q: What is the difference between “Check Your Understanding Questions”, “Practice Quizzes” and “Exams”?

A: Check Your Understanding questions are presented immediately after the material is covered in the content. These are ungraded and you have the choice to see immediately whether you selected the correct answer to a question Practice Quizzes are presented in the “Practice” section by module. The Practice Section includes Quizzes (including HCFA Quizzes in some modules) and games. These questions and games allow you to see immediately whether you selected the correct answer and the quiz grades are reported in the eGradebook. The Exam is similar to a real test. You answer all the questions first and get your grade at the end of the exam. This grade will also be reported in the eGradebook.

Q: If I score poorly on a test, may I take it again?

A: You may retake the quizzes and tests as many times as necessary within your access time of 20 weeks but only the last five scores will be recorded in the eGradebook.
